Econ Eye is the blog companion of the Bade-Parkin textbook series. On this blog, we provide an internet community for students learning the principles of economics.
What do we do?
We do a few things on this website, with the unifying theme of supporting students.
Eye On – We take the models and information from our textbook series and analyze something going on in the world, usually in the form of a news article. The aim is to help our readers understand the world through the lens of timeless economic models.
Economics in the News – While we’re partial to reading textbooks, it’s important for students to practice the skills of economics in addition to completing readings. This section of the website is dedicated to linking articles for students to read and providing them with reflection questions to check their understanding.
Expanding your PPF – By “expanding your PPF” (which is economics shorthand for “production possibilities frontier”), you’ll become more productive as a student. From our team’s many years of helping students learn the principles of economics, we’ve compiled the best tips and “tricks of the trade” that we think will help a student succeed in a first-year economics course.
Student Questions – Sometimes students write their questions to us. (If you have a question, please write in!) Because it is so often the case that many students have the same question, we’ll publish our answers in this section of the website so all our readers can read them.
What’s with the logo?![]()
The landscape of rolling hills at the center of our logo represents the real world—a complicated world that we want to better understand.
The geometric shape, popping with primary colors, represents an economic model.
Economics uses models to understand a complicated economic world. When we view the world through the lens or eye of an economic model, we see the world more clearly.
What does “Econ Eye” mean?
Much like our logo, our team name is a nod at what we would like to accomplish with this blog. When you look at something with an “econ eye,” it means you’re approaching a real-world situation from like an economist. After following our blog for a short time, we hope you’ll use two “econ eyes” when you read an article, make a purchase, choose next semester’s classes, vote for President, or find yourself in just about any situation.
